Chapter Fifteen

Bree

I HAD NO IDEA WHAT Luke had up his sleeve, but I trusted him. He had shown up this morning saying he had a big surprise in store for me today. I had no idea what he was up to, but I was looking forward to getting out of the house and changing up our routine.

“Ready?” he asked, parking the car.

“I can’t say if I am because you won’t tell me where we are. I think this qualifies as abuse of the blind and I’m certain it is against the caregiver code.”

He laughed. “I would never abuse you.”

I heard him get out of the car and stayed put. A few seconds later, the passenger door opened, and his hand was on mine. He was old school. He always opened doors for me. I knew it wasn’t just because of my blindness. He was just that kind of guy.

A cool breeze washed over me as I got out of the car. I could feel we were in the shade. “Where are we?” I asked, inhaling the air, trying to detect if we were near the water. I didn’t hear the sound of crashing waves or the telltale signs of seagulls flying overhead.

“We are at a place I think you might like,” he answered, taking my hand in his.

I heard birds chirping in the distance, along with hushed voices of various conversations. “Are we on a hiking trail? I’m not sure this is a good idea.”

“We’re not on a hiking trail, not yet. We are at a bird sanctuary.”

I cocked my head to the side. “What is that?”

“It’s a bird sanctuary, birds live here,” he said dryly. “You know, for sanctuary.”

I laughed. “What exactly are we doing here? Don’t you come here to look at birds? That’s kind of mean.”

“Actually, no. A lot of birdwatchers never actually get to see the birds they are so desperate to watch. They blend in with their surroundings. But, birdwatchers also relish in the sound of the birds. That’s what we’re doing.”

I slowly nodded. “Okay. I can understand that, but why? Isn’t birdwatching for old people?”

His soft laugh washed over me. “I don’t think there’s an age requirement.”

He held his hand in mine while he paid our entrance fees. It kind of felt like a date. I knew it wasn’t a date. He was being paid to hang out with me, but it still felt nice to be treated like I was special. He led me down what felt like a brick pathway. He walked slow, alerting me to bumps in the path or when it turned left or right.

“Let’s sit here,” he said, gently pulling me to a stop. “It’s a bench under some trees, which could be dangerous considering we’re in a bird sanctuary.”

I laughed. “I should have brought an umbrella.”

“Listen,” he whispered, squeezing my hand. “Do you hear them singing?”

I closed my eyes, a habit I wasn’t about to break. I opened up my ears and inhaled. I imagined he was doing the same thing.
